ASIAN JOURNAL:
THEIR chemistry as a comedic tandem is one of the many reasons why the masses keep watching the longest noontime show in Philippine television, Eat Bulaga! Back then, Jose Manalo and Wally Bayola were two struggling performers trying to make ends meet.
But on March 2, the duo’s hard work will pay off as they set to wow a big crowd via their first headlining concert, The Jose and Wally Show: Party for Every Juan!
Set to happen at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, the Jose and Wally concert is expected to be fun-filled just like their team-up of six years in their daily Eat Bulaga! segment, Juan for all, All for Juan: Sugod Bahay sa Barangay, and their regular stint at Zirkoh comedy bar.
During the concert’s press conference last Feb. 19 at the Imperial Palace Suites in Quezon City, Jose and Wally admitted that they still get anxious of how the concert will be received by the people considering Anne Curtis’ and Mr. and Mrs. Ogie Alcasid’s were sold-out concerts at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Thinking that the concert might be “a little off” when it comes to schedule, Jose and Wally still hope that people will still come to their concert. Jose even jested that he is willing to pay for vacant seats just to say that the concert was sold-out.
“Kahit lima lang yung kulang. Basta…bayaran ko nalang yung kulang do’n sa taas, mapuno lang.”
Wally, on the other hand, said that they never forget to pray for the concert’s success and leave the rest to God. As for the preparations, Jose shared that they are familiarizing themselves with the songs wherever possible—may it be at the house, on the street, or in the car.
Since most of the time, they come as a package; many could not help but wonder if Jose and Wally ever fought about their billing during shows. To clarify this, Jose was first to say that billing and talent fee never became an issue for him and his partner. Although he admitted that there were times when he was offered a bigger talent fee, Jose refuses such offers and have always insisted that he and Wally get equal shares from their shows.
Wally said that he does not get affected about talent fee issues.
“Sa totoo lang hindi, hindi. Actually, kung sa ibang shows, dahil minsan naman… actually nauna naman talaga si Jose sa akin, yung ganun,” he said.
Like anything in showbiz, people try to compare Jose from Wally and vice versa, but the two knew better to recognize their respective talents and performing edge rather than quarrel. Wally and Jose have chosen to appreciate the fact that they have come this far compared to where they were years ago.
Abandoned as a baby and raised within the confines of a church, Wally grew up as a natural performer singing along with choir members of the church and entertaining what he considered as family. He only knew who his father was when he was 33 years old.
Most of the time mistaken as gay, Wally is very much comfortable with his straight sexuality. Wally believes it is because of too much role-playing as being gay while onstage, that people start to wonder if he really is gay. Actually a self-admitted loner, Wally is already married for 17 years and has five children. He was his wife’s first and last boyfriend.
Jose, on the other hand, married at a tender age of 17. He gave up his studies to pave way for his wife to finish her course in Hotel and Restaurant Management while he worked as a pedicab driver and cigarette vendor. During his earlier days, Jose also worked as a clown which showed his knack for making people laugh.
Jose also has five children that he considers as his inspiration to work. Also known in real life as Ariel Manalo, Jose was the floor director for Eat Bulaga! in the early 2000 and was constantly called forth by Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon to have fun with the audience. Soon, he became one of the regular co-hosts of Eat Bulaga! and was later joined by his long-time friend Wally who used to work a front man for a band.
Considering everything they have gone through, Jose and Wally promise to give their best performance in their upcoming concert. With big time guests like Vic Sotto, Joey De Leon, Ai-Ai Delas Alas, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Gary Valenciano, Aiza Seguerra, Ciara Sotto, and many more, the Jose and Wally concert is definitely something to watch out for.
